The mail carrier brought our caterpillars today!
We are watching as they eat, grow and shed their exoskeletons. When they are ready, they will climb to the top of their containers, hang upside down, and become chrysalides!
We can hardly wait to watch them hatch into butterflies (Vanessa cardui)! In a little over three weeks, we will get to create habitat and feed them in our pavilion before releasing them into our flower garden!
(Stay tuned! We will post updates on our scientific observations!)

Happy Mother's Day!

Everyone should be so lucky as to have a home-made gift on Mother's Day!
Everyone should be so lucky as to have the love of a sweet, funny, little boy for Mother's Day!
Benjamin Jon has spent a lot of time thinking about, and talking about, his Grandma's.
As we traced, cut, decorated, stemmed and arranged paper flowers, we talked about gardens, and Grandmas, and flowers, and love.
As I showed Ben how to press his fingers on the stamp pad, Ben said he thinks his fingerprints "will help them grow into real flowers, because I am a real boy".

Serious Springtime!

We have had beautiful weather! We had enough sunshine, over the weekend, to finally break out the water table and water toys! Ben and Lucy Kitty spent hours playing with the variety of bugs that were landing in it. We have already seen 2 carpenter ant queens, a tiny grasshopper, 2 wasps, a mosquito-eater and 3 tiny little unknown beetles ("black dot bugs"), taking a swim.
It was so sun-shiny that Ben decided it was summertime. So, he went to his room and got dressed for the kiddie pool. If he could have managed it, he would have wrestled the kiddie pool out into the yard and filled it himself! This kid is stoked!
Today it was 75 degrees Fahrenheit by noon and we are digging it!!!

All Aboard!

The Dress-Up Train is leaving the station again! Chugga-chugga-choo-choo!
Conductor Benjamin has a train yard full of very useful engines!
He makes sure they are all on track and on schedule!
Ben LOVES to wear costumes these days. There are just not enough costumes available in springtime to satisfy his theatrical desires. I have searched, but the consignment sales, thrift shops and general stores have them stashed away for a season of higher demand. Ben is working with what he's got. Today, he was a Conductor Super-hero Spider Chicken! However, when I pointed that out to him, he said, "No I'm not! I am a boy! And I am a really good dancer!". Just so we have that straight.

We have been enjoying a roll down the good ole' historical train tracks too. Here is a link to our favorite (Engineer Bill!). Green light!

Mr. Burkhart Jr.

"Okay, Mom, now you sit down and let me be the teacher!"
"Okay, teacher's friend, how would this word spell like?"
"C-A-T.. Ca..Ah..Tt! CAT!"
"That spells CAT!"

Yes. There are pictures on the back of the cards. However,  since we have been working through the Beginning Readers BOB Books series, he gets many of them without the picture clues. Today he spelled, then read, "car", "cat", "cow", and "man" by making the sounds of each letter to sound them out! He is just gleeful to turn them around and see that he was right! He no longer gets confused by upper and lower case letters. He is on his way to Pandora's Box of literacy! I am so proud of him!

Far and Wee

and wee!
In Just-
spring     when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles    far    and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far    and    wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop scotch and jump-rope and

balloonMan    whistles
